I was 41, renting two rooms over a bakery in Marseille. The smell of bread came up through the floor at four every morning, and I knew the baker's hours better than my own.

• A second marriage, freshly over, and what ended it was money that neither he nor I had ever spent.
• A third job lost inside two years, and nobody could tell me quite why.
• A line my friends had about me: if it rained soup, Claire would be standing there with a fork. I laughed with them.

The worst of it? Not one bit of it was a surprise. My whole life had been the same story in smaller sizes. So had my mother's, and so had her mother's.

And there is a myth people love to hand you at a time like that. Karma is there to teach you, they say, so sit still and take the teaching.

Sometimes you should not.

If you want things to turn in this life and not the next, sitting still will rarely get you there.

I can say so, because I sat still.

I was patient. I was kind. I was good to people who were not good to me.

I did everything right.

And doing everything right got me this:

I hated it because of who got the other sentence. People who never had to try. People who were careless with money and careless with hearts, and for whom it all worked out anyway.

I could read anybody's life across a table. I could not read my own.

I wanted more than a life spent listening for the next thing to break.

So I did what people do. I went hunting for an exit.

I hunted high and low. Some months on it turned up, and not in any shop.

It was in a kitchen drawer at my grandmother's, under her Tarot de Marseille, wrapped in a blue tea towel that still smelled of lavender and dust.

One folded sheet, in her handwriting. I read it standing up, with my coat still on.

It was our family, drawn as a single line running down the page. Her own grandmother at the top. My name at the bottom.

In three places along that line she had made a small mark, and beside each mark she had written a few words. "The money, again." "Left alone, young." And at the foot of the page, underlined twice: "Nobody ever looked at this."

I nearly put it back. There was nothing mystical about it. It looked like something you would draw for a child.

Then it came to me what was in my hands, and why every single thing I had paid for had worn off.

So Here Is What Karmic Debt Actually Is, And Why Every Cleansing You Tried Was Aimed At The Wrong Thing

Karmic debt is no punishment. Nor is it a lesson. Nor is it a bill.

Everybody carries some. Most of it settles quietly by itself, the way a puddle dries when you leave it alone.

But now and then, somewhere back in a family, something is left open and nobody looks at it. Nobody speaks of it. It is put away like a letter nobody wanted to read.

A debt like that does not stay a debt. It pulls tight. It becomes a knot.

Picture your family as one long cord, running from them down to you. Where something was left open and never seen, the cord knotted. And a knot holds its shape. It repeats that shape, generation after generation, until it reaches whoever is holding the end.

From there the debt behaves like a collector at the door. It collects. It takes its cut. It comes to be paid.

Everything good that travels down that cord toward you snags on the knot and gets pulled back. The money that leaves the week it came. The love that goes quiet. The fresh start that does not take. The chair across from you that stays empty.

That is why it moves from room to room in your life. It was never tied to your money or your heart. It is tied to the cord, and the cord ends at you.

And that is the unfairness of it, plainly. The people who never had to try were never handed one.

Now look at everything you were ever sold. Every piece of it treats the trouble as dirt. Something on you, something in the house, something to wash off, burn off or smoke out.

But your debt is not dirty. It is knotted.

Wash a knotted apron string a hundred times. What you get is a very clean knot.

• A forgiveness list is written to other people. The knot is not in other people.

Karma Does Not Need Paying. It Needs To Be Seen

This is the law under the whole book, and I have never seen it printed anywhere else.

A karmic debt stays open for one reason only: nobody has brought it into the light.

Think of a letter that came for your great-grandmother and was pushed to the back of a drawer, unopened. Nobody read it. So it kept being delivered. To her daughter. To hers. To you.

It was written in your line, and never read.

Unseen, it repeats. And every time it repeats, the knot pulls a little tighter. That is why the trouble grew over the years, from "bad timing" to the year of everything.

There is a second side to this, and it is the one you can feel.

A family that has been knotted for generations teaches its children a habit, without ever meaning to. Brace. Say "maybe". Expect the take-back. It plays in the background of your days like a kitchen radio left on in another room, so low you stopped hearing it years ago.

Here is what I found out. The moment you name a knot in your own handwriting, you hear the radio. And a radio you can hear is a radio you can switch off.

A thing brought into the light does not go back into the dark. That is why this is done once, and why it does not come creeping back after a week.

Now, who does what. This part matters, and it stays between us.

Reading the cord is my work. Finding where it is knotted, and what each knot is tied around, takes thirty years of cards and charts, and I am handing you all of it.

The untying is not my work. It cannot be.

I could read it for a hundred people. I cannot untie one. That part was always yours, and nobody ever told you.

A ritual is something done at a debt by a stranger who never names it. Naming needs three things: the person carrying it, the words, and a page. You are the only one on this earth who is the first of those.

You Already Own The Proof, And It Has Been Sitting In Your Own History The Whole Time

None of this needs to rest on my say-so. You ran the test yourself, several times over, and you kept the results.

Go back to your most recent try. The candle, the clearing, the hour with someone you paid. Give it its due. It did work. For about a week.

That week is worth more than anything else I can show you. Here is why.

A load and a knot behave differently.

Carry a shopping bag that is too heavy, take out two tins, and it is lighter. It stays lighter. It does not quietly fill up again by the following Sunday.

A knot is another animal. Pick at the outside of a knotted shoelace, miss the one turn keeping it shut, and you get a few slack days. After that it draws itself back into the very shape it had. Every piece of string on earth does this. There is nothing spiritual about it. It is what string does.

So those seven quiet days were not a failure. They were a reading.

What they told you: your money touched the outside, and the knot itself was left alone.

You Were Right That It Came From Outside You. You Were Just Never Given The Name

Think of all the explanations you have tried on over the years. One thread runs through every one, and it is the right thread.

Not once did you point the finger at yourself. You looked out the window, not in the mirror. So let us go through what you saw out there, because you were nearer than anybody let you know.

Where it runs out: they did not make the knot. They caught on it, the way a sleeve catches on a nail. You shut them out, the scenery changed, and the pattern went on standing.

What it really is: someone who snagged on a cord knotted long before your birth. Nobody tied it. There is no culprit to hunt, which is why the hunting never helped.

Perhaps you thought it was the house, or something in it.

The walls. The old mirror. The thing you brought home from a market stall. Why it felt true: it trails you from room to room.

Where it runs out: you did cleanse that house, and not only once. Then you moved, and the trouble was waiting in the new kitchen before the boxes were open.

What it really is: knotted to your line, and your address has nothing to do with it. No smoke can drive a knot from a house it never lived in.

Perhaps you thought it was a past life.

Something from long ago, come round to collect. Why it felt true: it began when you were far too young to have caused a thing.

Where it runs out: you are handed a story and nothing to do with it. One fascinating evening, then Monday, unchanged.

What it really is: you were right that it started before you. But it was carried, not earned. It was left open in your line and never seen, and it has been handed down like a coat that fit nobody.

All your instincts pointed out the window. All of them were right.

Only the name was missing. And a thing with no name cannot be untied.

Nobody Is Born Unlucky. Something In Your Line Was Never Seen

One short sentence has eaten more years than all the failed candles combined.

"Some people are simply born under a bad star."

Those words came out of my own mouth once, in two rooms over a bakery, and they very nearly became the last word on my life.

The trouble with that sentence is this.

Luck is no birthmark. It is no eye color, and no nurse hands it out at the hospital. Nobody has ever shown how one child would be issued less than the child in the next cot. Ask for the how. You will get a shrug in a Sunday hat.

What there is, is something left open in a family line and never looked at. It has a place on the cord. It has a size. It can be drawn on a sheet of paper.

Fate has no handles. There is nowhere to take hold of it. A knot is a different matter: it can be found, it can be counted, and whatever can be found and counted can be worked free.

And earning has nothing to do with it. It was never yours. It came down to you the way a surname does, and you have been answering for it ever since.

The #1 Mistake Everyone Else Makes Is Lighting Another Candle At A Knot

There are two kinds of people carrying a knotted debt.

There are the "Lighters" and there are the "Finders".

I spent most of my years as a Lighter.

A Lighter's plan is to keep doing good, hopeful things at the trouble until the trouble gives up and goes.

And so a Lighter spends her years on...

• Candles, salt, sage and moons circled on the calendar
• Pardoning people who never once asked for it
• Cleansing the same rooms and the same crystals, over and over
• Paying strangers to clear a thing not one of them had looked at

Every item costs money and hope. And every item leaves the knot sitting right where it sat.

The answer is the opposite of everything you were sold.

Stop lighting. Start looking. Find the knots, name what each one is tied around, and untie them in your own hand.

This way, there is one finding, one naming and one untying.

The old road gives you a calm week, and then the familiar trouble back on the doorstep, since no one ever found a thing.

I am not telling you candles are bad. I still light one at dinner.

I am telling you that if what you want is for the trouble to stop, and stay stopped, candles may be what keeps your hands busy while the knot sits untouched.

The old way asks for candles, calendars, repeating, money, and the quiet belief that you must have done something to deserve this.

Beside each knot are a few plain words saying what it is tied around.

The first: money. "What comes in is gone within the week." The second: love. "The one who goes quiet." The third: loneliness. "The table set for one." And in the margin beside each, how far back it runs.

That is the entire thing. One cord. Three knots. One sheet of paper.
